I was gagging bad when the vinegar was boiling,and the lemon juice wasn't exactly pleasant smelling either!.(it did clear my sinuses though,like snorting ammonia!).A gallon of white vinegar costs about the same as a spray can of carb cleaner but I think it works even better.especially on carbs plugged up with ethanol deposits.When it comes to troubleshooting engine problems, one question that often arises is whether to use starter fluid or carb cleaner. I would not suggest boiling a carb in either solution in your house though. I tried lemon juice once too,it worked equally well,I guess the acidity & citrous cleans the metal right down to the pores-both times I noted a pile of white residue in the bottom of the pan,I suspect it was boiled out of the passages that carb cleaner cant really penetrate into. I tried that, using the wood stove in my garage-got the white vinegar boiling good and dunked the carb in,let it boil awhile.I was shocked how clean it was after I took it out,and I put the carb back together,and put it back on,the engine ran perfectly again. I've had a few very grungy carbs that failed to work very good even after a good soaking in a bucket of Chem-Dip ,I was ready to toss them away,but I read how some motorcycle guys were using pure lemon juice or white vinegar and they'ed boil the carb while submerged in either one for about 15 minutes and they came out like new. If you have any ideas, I thank you in advance! I decided to sleep on it, do some research, and reach out to all of you for some direction. I took down the carburetor again and gave it another cleaning. The engine would not start or run except on ether. At first I suspected a failed anti-backfire solenoid, but I removed it and verified that it works, the plunger moving with the turn of the key, as it should. I went out and verified good fuel flow from the tank to the carburetor bowl, verified that the pump worked and that we had good fuel flow all the way to the carburetor. Two weeks later the owner called to say the tractor would not start, though he could get it to fire on starting fluid. The engine started and ran.a bit rough.but it evened out within a few minutes. I removed, cleaned, and re-installed the gas tank. I also added an in-line fuel shut-off valve for good measure. After this, I changed the oil and filter, disassembled and cleaned the carburetor, replaced all fuel lines, fuel filter, and fuel pump. It is possible that the owner ran the tractor for a time in this condition, but I am not sure. Apparently, even with a fuel pump, there was a lot of fuel flow just by gravity alone. Not long ago the crankcase flooded with gas as the carburetor float mechanism must have gotten stuck open and the fuel emptied into the engine. I'm working on a Cub Cadet LTX 1050 with a Kohler Courage SV725-3021.
